TRAINING TIPS TIPS AND IDEAS OF BASIC HORSEMANSHIP Pressure and Release A horses needs to yield and move away from pressure. The rider needs to recognize the effort and give release to horse. Direct Rein / Neck Rein The rider needs to know the different between the direct rein and the neck rein. 1. The direct rein softens the jaw and leads to the collection and the horse breaking at the poll. I use the direct rein softly when bending and warming a horse up. 2. The neck rein moves the horse’s body from his poll to his shoulders. Horse needs to stay soft and collected, this helps him stay balanced and his back is round. When his back is round is when he is in him most athletic state. When riding patterns it is necessary for the horse to neck rein, when forced to use the direct rein because horse is offering resistance then the direct rein is used with discipline. Turns and Forward Motions When working on turns it is important to maintain forward motion this improves the purpose of the neck rein. Side pass and leads Horse needs to yield to the leg, this accomplishes crisp lead departures. If a horse can side pass he will be able to make correct lead departures. Transitions Being able to go from a lope to a trot, fast circle to slow circle improves the horses ability to rate. Stops When a horse stops correctly his back is round, he is soft in the jaw, he moves forward into a comfortable slide stop. (Be careful not to back a horse up too much this will force him to brace his front end) Rollbacks If a horse has a good rollback he will be more efficient within certain patterns. During lessons with Curt we will put these five steps together and help you find your way through better course management. Good course management is the most effective way to improve with mounted shooting.
